Jamis Coda S3 (Step-over)
OWNING CITY STREETS FOR OVER 40 YEARS
Jamis Bikes, based in New Jersey, introduced their hybrid/city commuter in 1981. The Coda has been one of their most popular bikes for decades, and a favorite of Small Shop, for good reason.
1) The smooth-riding chromoly frames eat up the bumps of Chicago streets (cr-mo steel is tough, flexible, and light), and the well-thought-out design puts you in a heads-up riding position (so you can keep your eyes up for traffic but still push and pull on the bars to give you the speed you need).
2) The tires are wide enough to give you the confidence to ride over whatever (but not so wide that they slow you down).
3) The smart component selections prioritize metal over plastic, and decent parts that are functional and durable. The v-brakes are extraordinarily responsive, and the trigger shifters make changing gears simple, so that when you get tired of pushing through a headwind on the lakefront, you can easily shift down and power through.
Simply put, these bikes are some of the best and most versatile around.
